How many eggs do chickens lay in a day?

Well, according to the books, one.  They need 25 hours (or so) to get through their system and therefore they cannot lay more than one egg a day.  Fried would disagree.  In the space of one hour she laid two eggs (one normal and one softie).  Therefore the books must be wrong and it must be possible for chickens to have them 'backed up' as it were and ping them out one after another.  We think that it might be her entering 'old age'; knowing that she is supposed to lay eggs but not really sure when is the right time or how many to lay.  Poor Fried!
